My photography explores the juxtaposition of near and far, macro and micro. How we as animals and humans embrace the universe, the sun, the moon, and the changing seasons. By photographing the minute details of living things and then taking to the sky with aerial photo techniques to capture the larger landscapes I feel my work presents an interesting look at our place on this earth and within ourselves. My hand is present at every point in the process of my work. Traveling around Iowa to acquire images, editing and processing the images, printing and proofing the images, and finally the matting and framing the Fine Art Giclee prints and canvases are all completed personally by me in my studio. My wife, Sandy Gustafson, and I both participated in the first 3 or 4 years of Art on the Prairie but at that time I was designing and building custom furniture. I am very excited to share this new art form with you!

My photographic work highlights Iowa landscapes, birds, plants and animals. I enjoy capturing uncommon views of common subjects with most of my camera-time at Iowa's state and county parks, urban areas or in my home gardens. My work has been featured in several exhibits including Octagon Center for the Arts, Ankeny Art Center and the Galleries at Jester Park Nature Center. |

Mary Howell-Williams is a Fine Art photographer who specializes in capturing the energy and essence of flowers and plant life. She studied photography at both Iowa State University in Ames and Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, but stepped away from the art as she worked and raised her daughters. When the family moved to a home with a large established flower garden in Beaverdale in 1999, she was compelled to take up her camera again, and hasn’t put it down since. She still lives among the flowers in Beaverdale, and currently works as a Fine Art Specialist at Beeline and Blue in Des Moines.

In 2007, I began my career as a fine art digital photographer, capturing the wide-open spaces of the rural Midwest. I glorify the scenes with brilliant colors and strong contrasts, shooting at just the right angle, during specific atmospheric conditions. I watch, and wait for these special moments in light. Whether it is an old barn, truck, tree, I aim to tell the story of how it has weathered in the bittersweet seasons of the country. I use moments in nature to express the many emotions we experience as humans. I travel all over the country to participate in art shows, but most of my pictures were shot within a 20 mile radius of my home in Amana, Iowa. While I have a degree in Studio Art, I have never taken a class in photography. I have degrees in Psychology and Studio Art. I have two children, Jakob (18), and Sara Rose (15). My studio/gallery is on Main Street in Amana.
For 15 years, I have worked non-stop, almost obsessively, trying to progress to new levels with my art. Through a lot of trial and error, I have developed a technique I am finally pleased with: I shoot pictures under specific atmospheric conditions I edit, using several computer programs. I increase contrasts, saturate some colors, desaturate other colors, add texture layers. I print, using archival inks and papers. I mount to cradled wood panels using acid free adhesive I protect with several layers of a UV protected, museum quality varnish for digital media. |

I am an Iowa landscape and nature photographer based in Des Moines focusing on rural and rugged landscapes both within the state of Iowa and throughout the United States. Rocks, trees and water are a favorite subject of mine and I try to incorporate these elements into my photography whenever I can. This will be my second year at festivals and I am looking forward to continuing to share my experiences with the public. |

I was born in the South but raised in the Midwest where I’ve grown to love small towns and rural spaces. I use a camera to find the undecorated, authentic structures, landscapes, and people to create the first lines of a story that the viewer gets to finish. |
