Purple Pincushion by Sarah Bierstedt, designer & fine crafter
I am a self-taught seamstress who values attention to detail, customer service, and keeping fine craft alive and well. I design and stitch one-of-a-kind accessories for you and your home from repurposed felted wool, vintage linens, vintage findings, and other repurposed materials. I am inspired by color and texture as well as the whimsical imaginations of my daughters. You will see a mix of items in my booth ranging from useful bags to accessories to cheerful plush animal pillows. I source materials and stitch all week. Then I enjoy meeting my customers face to face when I travel around Iowa to art, craft, and vintage events. My product prices range from $10-$110 |

I have been knitting since I was 10, when my grandmother put yarn and needles in my hands and taught me the basics. I've been in love with fibers, textiles and garment design ever since. Today I work mostly in natural fibers: wool, mohair, alpaca and silk are favorites and specialize in small wearables such as bags, hats, scarves, mittens and socks. I often incorporate handspun and hand-dyed yarns into my work, and frequently use dyestuffs from my garden to produce subtle, muted colors that simply can't be duplicated commercially.
Felting, a challenging technique that has been called "controlled disaster" is another method I enjoy using to create hats, bags and other accessories that are sturdy, warm and have unique character all their own. All of my work is made entirely by hand, and no two pieces are ever alike. |

The brainchild of Maggie Howe, Girl With A Sword Productions started about twelve years ago selling printed tee shirts with a martial arts theme. (And yes, she does have a sword!)
Now, she makes handspun yarns and hand dyed fabrics and yarns. Most of the raw material used (wool, alpaca, llama, mohair, angora, etc) is sourced within the Central Iowa region. Using a wide range of materials, weights, and styles, the yarns are unique, and ideal for special projects by knitters, crocheters, and weavers alike. |

I began my artistic adventures as a child with a love of drawing and painting, studying painting as a young adult with an artist by the name of Dimitar Krustev. I have explored other mediums as well, while at the same time, finding great pleasure at the sewing machine creating objects both functional and nonfunctional. When I discovered I could combine my love of painting with my love of fabric, I found my passion. I love changing the surface of the fabric using dye, paint, stitch and other elements to create one-of-a-kind works of art.
Living in Iowa, nature is most often my muse, but trips to New York City to visit family, as well as other urban landscapes, has offered unique experiences and perspective to my work. Work created from the urban perspective is very abstract and incorporates metals and beads and found objects, while the work I create from nature is more realistic, giving me somewhat of a "split artistic personality". Either way, my work is my interpretation of my environment. |

Rebecca Loew is a textile artist living in Grinnell, Iowa. In addition to contemporary quilted art using fabric, thread, paint, dye, and fibers, she also creates patterns and textures on cloth using the the ancient Japanese art of Shibori. Shibori techniques utilize the tying, folding, stitching, and pleating of fabric prior to dyeing to make unique forms. Using indigo and other natural dyes Rebecca creates forms inspired by nature, various cultures, architecture, and her local environment. She enjoys teaching Shibori at the Des Moines Art Center where is currently on faculty. She also creates wearable art and home decor items to make art part of one’s everyday life.
